Bob Shay athletes give their best in Hailey

Buhl girls, Jerome boys take annual track meet

Buhl freshman Clara Comer was a star of Tuesday’s Bob Shay Memorial track meet in Hailey, winning the 100-meter dash in a school-record 12.5 seconds over Delaney Fox of Wood River. Longtime Wood River High School athletic coach Bob Shay wasn't necessarily concerned about gold medals. He only wanted his male and female athletes to have good work ethics and give their best.

On a cool afternoon in Hailey, those types of attitudes were on display Tuesday when the Bob Shay Memorial track and field meet made its annual visit to Phil Homer Field. All the athletes and volunteers gave their best to make a memorable meet.

It was totally memorable for the Buhl Tribe girls. Led by freshman sprinter Clara Comer, 3A Buhl captured a rare 115-114 triumph over the perennially strong 4A Jerome Tigers in the girls' standings. The Jerome boys won their team race 106 to 97.5 over the Minico Spartans.

The Wolverines of coaches J.C. Nemecek and Mike Glenn placed fourth in the five-team field, 54 points for the boys (23 distances and 17 field) and 53 points for the girls (11 sprints, 14 hurdles and 18 field).

Comer, Tuesday's 400-meter dash winner, set a new Buhl school record in the 100m dash at 12.50 seconds, nipping Wood River senior Delaney Fox (12.60) in a photo finish. But long-legged Fox won the 100m high hurdles (15.70) over unattached Rigby senior Mckinzie Anderson.

Freshman Kaitana Martinez provided Hailey's other gold medal, winning the triple jump (32-11.25). Martinez was second in high jump and second in intermediate hurdles.

Besides their 30 points in sprints and 32 in field, Buhl's girls also found the winning margin over Jerome with 32 points in distances sparked by 800m and 1600m gold medals by freshman Skyler Barger.

Junior Chase Caulkins paced Wood River's boys (23 distances) with second-place results in the 3200m and 1600m runs. He ran side-by-side with sophomore James Paris in the 1600m, and Paris won by a hair at the finish in 4:53.00.

Rob Paris, Wolverine senior, took the triple jump gold (41-0.25) and senior Dale McLaughlin won the pole vault (12-3). Other stars included Minico sophomore Cade Owen, who swept the hurdles, and Spartan freshman Tyler Brown, the 100m and 200m dash winner.

Jerome senior Brian Wickham captured gold in shotput and discus. Buhl junior Bertrand Alcaraz Garcia finished first in 400m dash and long jump. Wood River placed three teams in relays topped by the runner-up medley of Ben Stout, John Bartoletta, Josh Arters and Dale McLaughlin.
