It may be "slack" in the Wood River Valley, but there is still plenty to do.

This weekend, the Sun Valley Center for the Arts will conduct a full-day cooking class, "Beyond the Garden: Cooking Locally with Rasberry's Catering." Participants will visit local farms and learn how to prepare scrumptious delicacies with the fresh ingredients they gather. The class will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 2. It costs $75 for members and $125 for non-members.

Also on Saturday, May 2, from 3-5 p.m., gather the family and head out to The Center in Hailey for a free family activity day linked to The Center's "Farming in the 21st Century" exhibit. Families will make portable gardens inspired by Boise artist Chris Binion's paintings of barns, grain silos and other agricultural structures.

In conjunction with the Ketchum-based Community Library's presentation of the Smithsonian touring exhibition "Between Fences," The Center is seeking submissions for an open exhibition June 5 through Aug. 31 at its Hailey gallery. The Center is looking for submissions from local photographers, illustrators, painters and printmakers to present their take on the fences that inhabit our landscape, our community and our neighborhoods. Work must be delivered to the Sun Valley Center for the Arts in Ketchum by 5 p.m. on Friday, May 22.

Also coming up, The Center will present a fiction writing workshop, "Making Things Simple" by Brday Udall, from 9 a.m. to noon June 8-12 at The Center in Hailey. Udall wrote "The Miracle Life of Edgar Mint." which has been favorably compared with the work of John Irving and Charles Dickens. He has also published a book of short stories, "Letting Loose the Hounds."

Udall grew up in Arizona, graduated from Brigham Young University and later attended the Iowa Writers' Workshop. He has taught at Franklin and Marshall College and Southern Illinois University and now teaches writing at Boise State University. The registration deadline for the workshop is May 22.
