Weekly track honors to Panther boys, Musher girls

Northside finals coming up Thursday

Depth and personal-best efforts served the Carey School boys' track and field team very well during Thursday's 13-school prep meet at Gooding's ISDB track. Meanwhile, speed and hurdles were winning factors for Camas County's girls.

Carey's boys, winning gold in only the medley relay but adding plenty of placing points, captured their first meet of the 2009 spring season. The Panthers (84 points) clipped Murtaugh by 14 points and were 14.5 ahead of Camas County.

"The kids had a lot of personal records mostly in field events," said Carey coach Lane Kirkland about the 16-athlete Panther boys' squad. "Good teamwork won the track meet. Everyone did their very best."

Andrew Carlson, the only Carey senior boy, had a personal-best 40-3 shotput for second place that lifted him into third place on the all-time Panther shotput list. Carey's winning medley relay squad featured Antonio Gamino, Jacy Baird, Dillon Cenarrusa and Joe Laidlaw.

Carey had a substantial 40-yard lead going into the anchor leg of the 4x400-meter relay, but Dietrich's outstanding senior sprinter Jaren Stoddard closed the gap and won the mile relay for the Blue Devils by a little less than three seconds. Carey's mile relay squad featured Baird, Brett Adamson, Gamino and Laidlaw.

Stoddard also won the 100m and 400m dashes, and placed second in the 200m dash to account for 30.5 of Dietrich's sixth-place 49 points. Another outstanding boy was Camas junior Jeff Ellingson, who won the shotput (43-4) and discus (145-7).

Tight race among the girls

Camas County's girls piled up 24 points in sprints, 25 hurdles, 29 in field and 20 in relays to outdistance Carey 106-91 in Thursday's totals.

Musher sprinter Lindsey Peterson captured the 100m and 200m dashes and helped Camas County to gold medals in the 4x100m and medley relays. Katelyn Peterson won the high jump and Mette Ericcson took the long jump at the Gooding field.

Competing without senior Kelsey Green for the afternoon, Carey still did well with junior Amy Ellsworth and freshman Micaela Adamson along with fine efforts from field athletes like senior Emily Andrews.

Ellsworth, last year's State 1A 1600m gold medalist, has been improving her stamina after a bout with sickness. On Thursday, Kirkland said Ellsworth made significant strides in her winning 800m time (2:39.10) and also her top 1600m effort (5:59.50). She also won triple jump (32-7).

Amassing 32.5 points on the day, Ellsworth joined Nicki Gomez, Kayla Bailey and anchor runner Adamson on Carey's winning 4x400m relay. Adamson, meanwhile, earned the gold in the 400m dash (1:06.60) and gave Camas' Lindsey Peterson a run for her money before settling for second place in the 200m (28.13).

"Micaela is doing well in that 200m. We're trying to get her under 28 seconds," said Kirkland. "And we're trying to put a power relay together in that 4x400. The girls did really well running 68-second and 72-second, 73-second laps."

Kirkland was also pleased that Emily Andrews had a personal-record 92-5 discus throw, for second place behind Shoshone's Kelly Perron. "That puts Emily in Carey's top five all-time, and I think the record is about 97 feet," said Kirkland.

Thursday's meet set the stage for the annual Northside Conference finals scheduled for Thursday, April 30 at 2 p.m. on Carey's track. The two-time defending team champions are Carey's boys and the Camas girls.

Next up are the state-qualifying District Four 1A finals May 6-7 back on the ISDB oval in Gooding.
