Thorson skips Legislature for Mexico

Session could end this week

By EXPRESS STAFF

Blaine County's only state senator has left the Legislature for Mexico.

Sen. Jon Thorson, a Democrat representing District 25, was gone as of Monday, according to Senate Minority Leader Kate Kelly, a Boise Democrat.

Thorson agreed to fill in this session for Sen. Clint Stennett, who is recovering from cancer treatments.

"Jon Thorson has an excused absence from the Senate," Kelly told the Idaho Mountain Express. "He went down to Mexico to pick up his wife."

Monday was Thorson's first day away from the Legislature. At this time, Thorson is the only member of the Senate who has left the Legislature, now running for a near record 100 days.

"There's going to be a lot of people dropping off here because of graduations and weddings," Kelly said. "People have just made plans."

District 25 is also represented by State Rep. Wendy Jaquet, a Ketchum Democrat.

"This was a previously planned vacation," Jaquet said, who added that Thorson consulted with Stennett before making the trip.

While he's gone, Thorson has arranged to "pair" his votes with other lawmakers.
