Wolverine pair powers to second place on pavement

Eastern Idaho Invite

Wood River's #1 girls' doubles team of Jessica Hamilton and Ellen Davis bashed their way to second place at the Idaho Invitational Tennis Tournament, hosted by Hillcrest in Idaho Falls. Only sophomores, Hamilton and Davis played defending state champion B Baker and K Ball of Hillcrest to a 6-3, 6-3 loss.

"They did really well, losing to last year's state champs," coach Vicki Johnston said.

The Wolverine duo won four matches, including an upset victory over the #2 seed from Idaho Falls.

Morgan Pike claimed the consolation championship 8-0 in an eight-game pro set, to finish third in the boys' singles draw.

In the team standings, Idaho Falls was first with 132 points, followed by Hillcrest at 90, Wood River 60, Skyline 50, Pocatello 42, Bonneville 36, Burley 14, and Sugar Salem 12.

In boys' singles, Kuba Pros lost in the quarterfinals to the eventual tournament champion, according to Johnston. Allie Freund made it to the semifinal round in the consolation draw, as did Hannah Baybutt and Lauren Reutter in girls' doubles.

Also playing for Wood River were Raleigh Grossbaum, Tanya Greenwood and Emilie Jeneson in singles, and pairs Brendan Freund and R.J. Forgeon, William Eagan and Jordan Niedrich, Alex Henning and Kelsey Brennan and William DeBree and Morgan Jones.

On Thursday, the Wolverines (6-2-3) rolled league-rival Burley 11-1 in Hailey. It was their second straight Great Basin Conference West victory and brought their win-record to an even half-dozen.

Hailey hosted Jerome Tuesday and will be in Boise Friday and Saturday for the Capital Invitational.
