Like the New York Mets getting beat by the San Diego Padres on opening night at their new stadium, Citi Field, the Minico tennis team fell to Wood River 11-1 on the fresh asphalt of the Spartans' six newly built tennis courts Tuesday.

"The courts are really nice and I think they just got their fences up," Wolverine coach Vicki Johnston said.

Wood River (5-2-3) netted its fifth win of the season with strong team play, which focused on winning key points and making fewer errors.

"It was a bit chilly but something we have gotten used to," Johnston said.

Johnston said she was wowed with the performance of exchange students Thomas Gottelman and Kuba Pros, making their varsity debut at No. 2 boys' doubles.

"They have really great skills that they got to show off in a close three-set match," the coach said. "I was impressed with their focus, especially toward the end. They were the last match to finish and everyone was watching."

It was the only match of the day to go all three sets, although Sloan Storey won No. 1 girls' singles 7-6, 6-1, claiming the first set by tiebreaker.

"After that she just put the hammer down," Johnston said.

Altogether, the Wolverines won 22 sets and lost only three, beating the Spartans in games, 147-44.

The Wolverines will attend the Eastern Idaho Invitational hosted by Hillcrest High School April 17-18.
