Reduction

By CHRIS MILLSPAUGH

I've lost 29 pounds since January 15th. Something similar has happened to my humor page, as you can see. It had to be cut back one-third. Well, we're in a recession and we all have had to reduce. Life is up and down. So is my weight. Now, so is the humor section. Shall we call it "The Way I S-?" Is "Horrorscopes" now to be called "Horrorsco-" How about "CasinoWiz?" "Senior Mo-?" or "Ask Dr. Sp-?" No, we just have to trim a bit.

Newspapers all over the world—big and small—have had to cut back because of the recession, dwindling ad sales and the emergence of the Internet. It's just a fact and we all have to live with it. Publishing is a tough business, yet so is yours. We're all in a crunch now and must grin and bear it for a while. The thing I love about this valley is that we're all so resilient. We choose to live here for the beauty and the healthy life. Many of us have often thought of moving to richer markets. Hell, I've left five times. But, there's just something about this crazy county, the most liberal and affluent in the state, that keeps us coming back and continuing on. I think the people we see every day and struggle alongside are a major factor. Who laughs more than we do? We roll with the punches, get knocked down, then get up and start again. We'll all make it. You know we will.

I'm writing this after a day in which the temperature hit 61 degrees. I walked with my friend and her two dogs and had a wonderful time as the beauty of springtime was revealed. What's better than that?

Not only that, it's the baseball season again! Every team starts even and has a chance. And, so do we. I hope you have a wonderful day ... and nice talking to you.
