Deadline is April 10 for Howard Dean grant

Tuition help for a skier

The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation has announced that Friday, April 10 is the application deadline for the Howard Dean Scholarship.

An enthusiastic volunteer ski coach and member of the SVSEF board of directors, Dean died in 1994. After his death, Howard's wife, Peggy, established a scholarship, a full year's tuition, in his memory to be awarded to a deserving J1, J2, J3 or C-Travel Team athlete.

This year's recipient of the Howard Dean Scholarship will be announced at the alpine awards celebration April 16. Also given each year is the Howard Dean Award for a deserving girl and boy on the SVSEF Devo Team.

Dean, who learned to ski as a youngster in California, first came to Sun Valley with his parents at 17 and resolved to live here one day. In 1977 he purchased a gas station south of Ketchum, which is still named Dean Tire.  He moved to Ketchum with his wife, Peggy, and two children, Jana and Ryan, in February 1978.

Jana and Ryan became involved with the SVSEF ski program and remained involved through their high school years. Ryan Dean is now an alpine ski coach for the SVSEF.
