The Sun Valley Brewery is making music happen in Hailey. This weekend the brewery will feature Kevin Flynn, a renaissance musician who plays jazz, '50s rock 'n' roll and the didgeridoo, a wind instrument of the Aborigines of northern Australia.

"I mainly play saxophone," Flynn said. "I have been playing since I was 10 years old. I love many forms of music and play the harmonica. I also love Irish music and play the tin whistle."

Flynn will play solo at the Sun Valley Brewery on Saturday, April 4, at 6:30 p.m. and then will open the stage to an open mic and jam session for anyone who wants to join with a guitar or play a drum.

"I couldn't afford to bring anyone with me, so I will play solo with some recorded tracks and see who comes out," Flynn said.

Flynn's bands, the Rockomatics, the Slickrock Gypsies and Svengali Jazz Quartet, keep him busy. The Slickrock Gypsies have produced three CDs; the name comes from the sandstone features of the Southwest called slickrock.

"It's an area we love, and wanted to have a name that tied us to Utah," Flynn said. "The gypsy part is because we play such a variety of music and the band writes blues, Irish, folk and jazz music."

Flynn performed for the 2002 Winter Olympics, entertaining visitors in downtown Salt Lake City, and played for the governor of Utah, the Park City Jazz Festival, the Utah Arts Festival and the St. George Art Festival. He said he hopes to perform at more arts events in the Wood River Valley.

Flynn lives in Salt Lake City. When he is not performing, he is rehearsing and writing in his studio in the historic Baldwin Radio Factory. Flynn owns the building and renovated the building, which houses 14 art studios.

"It's filled and has a waiting list," Flynn said. "Every few months we have an open house with live music, and display artwork."
