Army colonel to speak on 'Overcoming Adversity'

Retired Army Lt. Col. Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch will talk about what it takes to be an effective citizen and leader in today's global marketplace at the Community Library in Ketchum on Wednesday, April 1, at 6 p.m. The talk is free.

Kickbusch is an education advocate and author.

The talk will be presented by the Lee Pesky Learning Center. Kickbusch will visit participants in the center's College Aspirations Program earlier in the day.

New garden club meets

An organizational meeting for the Valley Victory Garden Club will take place at the Hailey Public Library on Thursday, March 26, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. The new club will focus on sustainable vegetable and fruit in the Wood River Valley.

The club will plan for speakers and discussions about vegetable- and fruit-growing techniques, seed exchanges and casual tours of experienced gardeners' orchards and vegetable plots. For details call 721-1798.

Sawtooth Botanical Garden studies lava rock

The Sawtooth Botanical Garden will present a free, staff-guided and hands-on activity lesson on lava rock biomes today at 3 p.m. at the garden, which is located off state Highway 75 at Gimlet Road south of Ketchum.

The garden's Children's Discovery Corner has launched a program called "Lava Rocks!," an introduction to the volcanic activity that created the cinder cones, lava tubes and ice caves of southern Idaho. For details call 726-9358.

Meet area legislators

State Rep. Wendy Jaquet, Rep. Donna Pence and substitute Sen. Jon Thorson will host a legislative forum at Zou 75, 416 N. Main St. in Hailey, on Saturday, March 28, at 4 p.m.

Attend a free credit class

The Arch Community Housing Trust will offer a free credit basics class at the Wood River Community YMCA in Ketchum on Thursday, March 26, from 7-8:30 p.m. The class will teach credit management and understanding credit and FICO scores.

Teacher to bring home Iditarod award

Trent Herbst, a teacher at The Community School in Sun Valley and a mid-valley resident, has earned the award of Most Inspirational Musher at the 2009 Iditarod dogsled race in Alaska, the Anchorage Daily News reported. The race started March 7.

Herbst, formerly of Homer, Ala., won a trophy and $1,000 worth of gas "for teaching his students about the Iditarod," the newspaper reported.

"Herbst couldn't receive the award in person Sunday night. He was still guiding his dog team to Nome," the newspaper report states.

The 2009 Iditarod is the third for Herbst. He ran the race this year to raise awareness for a Ugandan non-governmental organization called National Lake Rescue Institute in a project called Race for Rescue.

Fire agency to hold contracting seminar

The Central Idaho Interagency Fire Center will be holding a seminar on how to do wildland fire equipment contracting with the Fire Center for the summer of 2009. The seminars will cover new requirements on competitive solicitations through the Virtual Incident Procurement System. The seminar will be held in Salmon, April 9, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Public Lands Center, Forest Service Main Conference Room, 1206 South Challis Street.

Give the valley a Clean Sweep

The Ketchum-based Environmental Resource Center is gearing up for this year's annual Clean Sweep event, which is set for Saturday, May 2. The event is a valley-wide clean-up effort that includes the communities of Sun Valley, Ketchum, Hailey and Bellevue.

In anticipation for the effort, the ERC is seeking volunteer community leaders to help organize groups of volunteers for the event. Those interested in helping out as community leaders should contact the ERC's Missy Hintz at (208) 726-4333 or by e-mail at missy@ercsv.org.
