School district sets trustee election

Declarations of candidacy now being accepted

The Blaine County School District board of trustees has scheduled an election for May 19 for the positions now held by board Chairwoman Alexandra Sundali and Trustee Kim Nilsen.

Sundali represents Zone 4, which includes west Ketchum and areas north and south of the city, while Nilsen represents Zone 2, which includes south Hailey and areas to the south.

Declarations of candidacy forms are available through board Clerk Laurie Kaufman at the school district office at 118 W. Bullion St. in Hailey. Kaufman can be reached at 578-5003.

Voting is set to take place from noon until 8 p.m. at Hemingway Elementary School in Ketchum for Zone 4 and at Hailey Elementary School for Zone 2.

The deadline for filing is 5 p.m. on April 17. As of Monday, no one had filed, and neither Sundali nor Nilsen have publicly stated their intentions.

Idaho law allows school districts to cancel board of trustee elections if there's only one candidate for a position. Such was the case in 2008 when no one filed against board Vice Chairwoman Julie Dahlgren, who represents Zone 5, which includes the east Ketchum and Sun Valley areas.

The description for Zone 4 states that it includes "all of Ketchum west of Highway 75 and north of Deer Creek Road to the Custer County line."

Zone 2 is described as "south of Croy Creek Road, Fox Acres Road and Quigley Gulch Road, including Woodside subdivision and southwest Hailey, and north of Glendale Road and Muldoon Canyon Road, excluding the city of Bellevue.
