Hot Shot basketball returns for a third year

Summer camp set for July in Hailey

Camp director Carson Sofro, a former basketball star at The Community School and University of Redlands, has announced the schedule for the third summer of his Hot Shot Basketball Camps. The Hailey camp is set for July 27-30.

Now called HSBCAMPS (Hot Shot Basketball Camps) with its new website hsbcamps.com, Sofro's program has three new locations—Summit High School in Bend, Ore., Chula Vista, Ca., and, for the first year, Wood River High School.

Sofro's program started two years ago with 40 campers and increased to 100 last summer. He expects many more registrations for 2009.

The Hailey camp will run from Monday through Thursday, July 27-30 with a morning clinic from 8-9:50 a.m. for kindergarten through third grade boys and girls (72 kids maximum) and also a Day Camp from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. for boys and girls in grades 4-12 (maximum 100 players).

All players receive a camp t-shirt.

Camp costs are $99 for the morning clinic and $295 for the camp. Scholarship and discounts are available and can be requested via the website.

Sofro said nearly all the staff from last year is returning. Confirmed staff members include Community School boys' head coach Ed Flory, Kevin Sweetwyne, Tayron Thomas and Keith Zalaski.

He added, "Giving back to the communities is a big staple of our program. Thus far we have raised nearly $12,000, which has gone towards the purchase two shooting guns for Wood River High School and The Community School, scholarships, and other projects."

Registrations are accepted online on a first-come, first-served basis, Sofro said.
