Parrish shines spotlight on all-around skiers

Halfpipe, bumps, SG keep locals busy

Pretty much everybody knows that Baldy is one of the best mountains in the world for the fast, groomed runs and perfunctory turns at high speeds.

Lane Parrish was all for the top to bottoms, but there was also a day some 25-30 years ago when Baldy had some of the best bump skiers around. And there could be a day in the near future when Sun Valley produces flashy, halfpipe artists.

The Sun Valley spotlight shined brightly on all-around skiing and boarding last weekend for the friendly, local celebration of spring called 17th annual Lane Parrish Memorial.

A classic Sun Valley persona of the 1970s and 1980s, Parrish was a speed and bump skier and movie stuntman who died at age 33 in a plane crash near Twin Falls in 1990. His style lives on in Parrish Memorial.

"Thanks to all of Lane's old ski buddies who keep the event healthy and alive for the kids, young and old, of the Wood River Valley," said organizer and support Ken Corrock.

For the first time, halfpipe was added to the Parrish fun, making it a three-day event.

Overall Super Combined winners were Ben Verge and Christine Cordeau—two local youngsters from skiing families dating back to Parrish's days on the hill. The Super Combined was for results from Friday's halfpipe competition, Saturday's bump contest on Race Arena and Sunday's Parrish super giant slalom race.

Corrock said, "This was the first year the Parrish hosted a halfpipe event. The halfpipe had 52 competitors, the bump contest had 60 and the super giant slalom had 91."

He added, "Conditions were fantastic for Friday's halfpipe with clear sunny weather. Saturday's bump contest pipe enjoyed soft snow with rain. Sunday's SG was run over three inches of new snow and a power outage early in the morning that shut down the Warm Springs side for an hour.

"The event had a great turnout for the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation's Alpine and Freestyle teams. It was great to see the freestylers racing on their twin tips and the alpine team kids running the bumps on their slalom skis. For many of the kids, it was the first time in gates as well as in competitive halfpipe and bumps."

Combined winners had the lowest scores when class placings of the Parrish SG and Parrish bumps were added. Air, turns and overall impression were judged in moguls, with the highest points winning.

The combined winners were Christine Cordeau, Cameron Fraser and Nate Schwing.

In the super giant slalom, Carl Rixon Jr. (63.00 seconds) and Christine Cordeau (71.95) came down the fastest of 70 men and 21 women.

Tai Barrymore, Wyatt Caldwell, Colter Brehmer, Trace Page and Ben Verge posted the highest scores in the men's halfpipe, while Christine Cordeau,, Haley Cutler, Rene Shapiro, Isabella Bourret and Alysha Herich led the gals.

In the bumps, the top men were Kurtis Fieguth, Austin Moses, Cameron Fraser, Trace Page and Ben Verge. The highest-scoring women were Christine Cordeau (second-best score of the day), Zana Davey, Debbie Page, Sarah Mazzola and Samantha Busby.
