Nothing beats experience and consistency in the Sun Valley Town Series of alpine races on Baldy's Cozy ski run.
Coming from behind Wednesday to repeat as champion of the Town Series was the Tekasoreass squad featuring Carl Rixon Jr., Matt Murphy, Sean Murphy and Chris Key.
On Week Seven the defending champions put up a 0.62 number in the combined two-runs format of the 18th annual Sun Valley Town Series sponsored by Sun Valley Co. and Watkins Distributing.
Tekasoreass squeaked by frontrunner Wood River Masonry, a foursome that had put up a long string of zeroes before giving up the lead with a 1.11 score in the final set of dual modified giant slalom races.
In the final totals Tekasoreass had 0.94 points and Wood River Masonry 1.11. On Wood River Masonry were Sean Higgins, Wes Powell, Jon McCuskey and Cam Fraser.
Sun Valley Race Department supervisor Mike Wrobel said Tekasoreass was the group that best stayed within the same distance of the middle-of-the-road "rabbit" racer each week in the Town Series. Consistency was the key, he said.
Scott USA (1.99) stayed hot for the fifth straight week with another 0.00-point day to retain third place in the 35-team field with JR Reagle, John Zuck, Jeff Page and Toby Arnett.
Three Dicks and a Chick (Curt Williams, Ken Edwards, Annelie Williams, Larry Williams) enjoyed another 0.00 Wednesday to wind up with 3.20 points for fourth place. And SVSEF (Erika Hogan, Ashley Brown, Sarah Mazzola) kept fifth place with 7.03 points.
Nate Schwing (50.94 seconds) clocked the fastest combined two runs Wednesday, followed by second-place Rixon (51.80), third-place Matt Murphy (53.78), John Campbell (54.01), Wes Powell (54.28) and sixth-place Erika Hogan (55.20).
Rounding out the top 10—with three women in the top 10 of 83 racers—were Cam Fraser (55.55), Jon McCuskey (56.18), Ashley Brown (56.90) and 10th-place Sarah Mazzola (57.19). Next fastest gals were Christine Cordeau (58.05) in 14th and Piper Reed (64.43) in 29th.
Kevin Doyle of Casino Dancing Bears once again had the "rabbit" time of 69.58 seconds.
The names of 20 racers from the top five teams in the season series were entered into a drawing for the grand prize of four Sun Valley 2009-10 season ski passes. That post-race drawing took place Wednesday during the post-race party at Apple's Bar & Grill.
Winners of the season passes were Jon McCuskey of Wood River Masonry, Larry Shipley of Three Dicks and a Chick, Toby Arnett of Scott USA and Carl Rixon Jr. of Tekasoreass.
Also, there was a "Dream Team" comprised of the most consistent racers, those with the lowest variance. Take note, team organizers—these are the racers you want on your team for next year's Town Series.
The "Dream Team" included, from #1 to #4, Wes Powell with 2.78% total variance, Alan Rickers 3.41%, Jon McCuskey 3.48% and, tied for fourth place, Sean Murphy 4.143% and Ashley Brown with 4.144%. The top four received prizes and Brown took an honorary award in the tiebreaker.
