Hailey leaders deserve praise

The Hailey City Council adopted the recommendation of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game to preclude foot traffic in the hills east of the Old Cutter's subdivision to allow big game to winter with little disturbance. This winter, 15 to 30 deer and up to 40 elk could be seen using the hillsides east of Cutter's. Thank you, Mr. Mayor and council for helping to preserve a community and Blaine County asset.

On several days, the group of elk ventured onto the west-facing slope of the popular hiking hill at the mouth of Quigley Canyon. Each day the tracks in the snow told the story of alarmed elk that bunched up and then trailed off the north side of the hill back over to Red Devil Mountain east of Cutter's subdivision. Hikers unknowingly caused those elk to abandon that area of winter use. That area is not under restricted winter access.

Hailey leaders should be supported as they consider ways to minimize human disturbance on big game during deliberations about the Quigley annexation.
