Diverse group sees 'Academics in Action'

Wood River Middle School Principal Fritz Peters leads a tour group through a middle school classroom as part of the Academics in Action tour.

A group of 40 citizens were treated to "Academics in Action" Monday during tours, presentations and discussions in Hailey at Wood River Middle and Woodside Elementary schools.

"We had a fantastic turnout and it was a great opportunity for people to see how their tax dollars support such a fantastic school district," said Heather Crocker, executive director of the Blaine County Education Foundation.

Crocker said tour participants included parents, prospective parents, retirees, elected officials and newcomers to the Wood River Valley.

Crocker said a tour highlight was a presentation at the Middle School by technology teachers Jeremy Silvis and Al Amato, whose discussion included communications systems, electronic automobiles and solar energy.

"Another highlight was the "No Excuses University" at Woodside," Crocker said. "It was exciting to see fifth-graders stand up and say that I am going to be a veterinarian, or I am going to be a teacher."

The education foundation holds two Academics in Action tours each school year. Next fall the tours will be held at Bellevue Elementary School and at Carey School.
