Spay, neuter your pets

Our valley is not immune to the downturn in the economy. We all know these are difficult times. The Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley has seen a 50 percent increase in the number of dogs and cats at The Shelter in the last 3 months. It is heartbreaking to surrender a pet who is a family member, but sometimes there is no other choice. The mission of ASWRV is to promote companion animal welfare by providing temporary shelter for homeless pets, adopting them to qualified homes, and reducing animal abuse, neglect and overpopulation though community education and spay/neuter services.

Last Monday evening someone dumped 15 puppies in the snow outside the shelter without food, water or cover from the elements. Thankfully an employee was late in leaving for the day and discovered them. If not for this twist of fate, some of the puppies might have not made it through the cold night. Again, we will care for these abandoned puppies; however, with a proper surrender we would have offered to spay and neuter the parents of the puppies so this sad tale would not be repeated.

We offer free or low cost spay and neuter clinics twice a month to the community. We encourage everyone to call The Shelter at 788-4351 to set up an appointment.
