The goaltenders were outstanding and the play was up-and-down the ice Monday night as top-seeded SV Auto Club/Grumpy's clashed with #2-seeded Morgan's Fine Finishes for all the Gund Cup Senior Hockey League marbles.

Despite numerous fine saves by Tony Benson of SV Auto Club and Chris Edwards of Morgan's, the game-winning tally was probably the softest goal of the night, and the loudest, by John McGuone on the power play with 24 seconds left in the regulation third period.

SV Auto Club/Grumpy's (9-5-0) eked out the 3-2 victory over Morgan's (7-6-1) to win the four-team tournament at Sun Valley Skating Center. Grumpy's outshot Morgan's 14-8 in the third period and rallied from a 2-1 deficit to prevail. Edwards (27 saves) and Benson (18 saves) did all they could.

Mark Stone (assist to Rod Watson) gave Grumpy's a 1-0 lead early in the first period. Spencer Brendel (Dave Hennessy) and Hennessy (Phil Hebert, Billy Tryder) brought Morgan's back into a 2-1 lead midway through the second.

Auto Club's Frank Salvoni converted a rebound for a 2-2 tie with seven minutes left, setting the stage for McGuone's winner in the final moment.

In Thursday's semi-final game, Salvoni had the three-goal hat trick as SV Auto Club/Grumpy's blanked #4-seeded SunValley.com (4-8-1) by a score of 5-0. Charles Friedman and Brad Stansberry added singles for the winners.

Five Star chicks are golden with sticks

Stop the presses! The Five Star Kitchen Design women's ice hockey team has finally won a tournament—and the Ketchum-based gals did it with an outstanding team effort Sunday in the "B" level "Chicks with Sticks" tournament at McCall.

Casey Mills Kelly scored the eventual game-winning goal on a second-period pass from Trista Ballou as Five Star (3-0-1) blanked the Boise Wildfire 1-0 in the championship game of the three-day tourney.

Five Star coach Dick Springs said the 1-0 title game was by far "the best he had ever seen the team play." Forwards worked hard, supported by defensemen Lacie Hernandez, captain Kelley Sinnott, Liza Weekes, Ballou and Nancy Parsons-Brown.

In fact, Five Star played shorthanded for almost six minutes at the end of the game. Notching the shutout was goalie Danae Commons.

Five Star tied Missoula Ice Hounds 1-1 Friday night on a Jini Griffith goal, from Sara Schroeder. On Saturday, Griffith's third-period goal on a feed from Ballou beat the University of Idaho 1-0. Five Star outshot the Moscow chicks 19-6.

Saturday's nightcap, starting at 11:15 p.m., turned into a fast and intense contest won by Five Star 3-2 over University of Montana. Scoring were Schroeder, Ballou and Lisa Wood, assists by Weekes and by Jenni Conrad on the Wood winner. Also skating was Bege Reynolds.
