Police arrest 2 in counterfeit scheme

Two people were arrested on counterfeit money charges Thursday morning on Airport Way in Hailey.

The suspects were identified in a press release from the Blaine County Sheriff's Office as Sandra Cubillos-Bernal, 34, from Northridge, Calif., and Cesar Amaya-Mendez, no age available, of Reseda, Calif. The sheriff's office reported that both suspects are illegal aliens from either Mexico or Colombia.

More than $14,000 in counterfeit cash was seized, most of it in phony $100 bills, the sheriff's office said.

"We believe that none of the counterfeit money was passed in Blaine County," said Sheriff Walt Femling. "But there are reports of these $100 bills being passed in other parts of Idaho."

The sheriff's office reported that the arrests were made after the suspects arrived from California to "retrieve the money that was hidden in a rent a car."

Assisting in the investigation were the Sun Valley Police Department and the U.S. Secret Service.

An investigation is still under way and more arrests are possible, the sheriff's office reported.
