Spiller leads Nordic kids in Great Race

Tahoe City to Truckee


A group of Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation junior skiers and coaches joined a 768-racer field for the 33rd annual Great Race 30-kilometer event from Tahoe City to Truckee, Calif. Sunday, March 1.

The fundraiser for the Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue Team started with just 60 racers in 1977 and has grown into one of the country's largest Nordic races. There were 670 finishers in Sunday's race, and some age class wins for locals.

Leading the field was Saab-Subaru Factory Team racer Tad Elliott, 20, of Durango, Colo., the reigning U-23 national men's bicycle racing champion. Elliott finished in 1.19:58. Boulder Ski Tour women's champ Rebecca Dussault, 28, of Bozeman, Mont. led women in 1.25:12, sixth overall.

Sun Valley's William Spiller finished 18th overall and second in the 16-17 class at 1.28:02. Andrew Pfeiffer won the 14-15 class and was 52nd overall in 1.37:55. The 13th woman overall, Sun Valley coach Ashley McQueen was 82nd and fourth in 20-29 class at 1.43:23.
