The public can visit Woodside Elementary School and Wood River Middle School on a tour hosted by the Blaine County Education Foundation on Monday, March 9. School District Superintendent Jim Lewis and Assistant Superintendent Lonnie Barber will lead the tous, which will run from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

"Academics in Action is a great opportunity to learn how your tax dollars support outstanding academic programs and how the district is working toward becoming a world-class, model school system," said foundation Executive Director Heather Crocker.

As part of the program, Woodside Principal Gary St. George will explain the school's No Excuses University campaign, designed to ensure that every student succeeds academically and is ready for college. Students and teachers will participate in the tour with a Leader of the Pack assembly to demonstrate the new culture of the school.

At the middle school, Principal Fritz Peters will describe how interdisciplinary teaching teams integrate the curriculum, such as teaching math while bowling in physical education, and teaching science and history in the outdoors. Administrators will explain project-based learning and its role in preparing students for college.

The district's bilingual Dual Immersion Program will be discussed at both schools.

Participants can join students and administrators for lunch at the end of the tour to hear what life is like from a student's perspective.

"The learning that takes place in our schools is transformative and inspiring," Crocker said. "We have bright, dedicated teachers, eager, optimistic students and learning environments that are dynamic and inviting. We want to share this with our community. Parents have opportunities to visit their own children's schools, but it's rare to visit a school that your child does not attend."
