After the success of the St. Thomas Playhouse's 2008 production of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," the playhouse decided to do a second valley-traveling theater tour with Moses Goldberg's "Little Red Riding Hood" and "The Three Little Pigs."
"It's like a band," said playhouse Director of Children's Ministries Anna Johnson. "We know each other well and are very comfortable going places. There is no traveling theater company in the valley and this is an opportunity for kids."
This year's tour of "Little Red Riding Hood" and "The Three Little Pigs" will be shared with Wood River Valley schools, preschools, libraries and the Children's Arts Festival. Andrew Alburger directs, costumes are by Alison Higdon, scenic design is by Kevin Johnson and scenic painting is by Judy Stoltzfus. Sara Gorby serves as choreographer.
"This show allows kids to participate in theater," Johnson said. "We invite the children to sit close and ask questions. We like to do shows kids know. They are really fun and as an actor it's good to share with kids because they keep you on your toes."
Last year, the playhouse shared its production of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" with over 1,000 children in the valley. This year the company will captivate children with the suspense of Red Riding Hood's encounter with a funny wolf and will garner support for the industrious third pig as he builds a house with audience participation.
"We wanted to base the concept for the show on a traveling circus and pulled images from old circus tours and tried to make it our own," Johnson said. "We love sharing with all the kids. It makes our day."
