Sports summary


Hank Dart second in Moab 50k run

Hailey's Hank Dart, 41, spent Valentine's Day running nearly 34 miles (50 kilometers) and placing second in the Master Men's class in the Moab (Utah) Red Hot endurance race. It was sunny with 30- to 40-degree temperatures Saturday.

Dart (5.21:48) was second to Masters winner Kevin Shilling, 41, of Salt Lake City, Utah (4.38:51). The overall men's winner was Dave Mackey, 39, of Boulder, Colo. in 3.58:50.

Sherbine in Russia with Red Bull sledstylers

Bellevue snowmobile racer Isaac Sherbine, 19, is due to arrive in Russia Thursday, Feb. 19 to perform with the Red Bull Sled Style SCS Extreme Snowmobile exhibition squad in a series of three weekend shows through March 7-8.

Sherbine, a 2008 Wood River High School graduate, is traveling to Russia with Red Bull athletes Heath Frisby, 24, of Bellevue and Joe Parsons, 21, of Yakima, Wash. The three placed 1-2-6 (gold medalist Parsons, bronze medalist Frisby and sixth-place Sherbine) at January's X Games Extreme Snowmobile contest.

This weekend, the Red Bull team will be doing freestyle jumping over a canal at Ekaterinburg, Russia. Thousands of spectators are expected. They'll move to Novosibrisk, Russia for another weekend show Feb. 28-March 1, and end up in Moscow March 7-8. Sherbine, youngest of three children of Rocky and Terri Sherbine, is due to return home to Bellevue with Frisby March 9.

Parent and player meeting for WRHS spring sports

Prospective baseball, softball, golf, tennis and track athletes at Hailey's Wood River High School have been asked by activities director John Rade to attend a pre-season Player-Parent meeting Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. at the high school. Spring practices begin at the end of February.

Monroe Cup, Basolo Memorial races this weekend

Little kids will race gates on the Warm Springs side of Baldy this weekend. The Intermountain Division's North Series is bringing J4 through J4 racers (ages 9-12) and a few 13-14 year olds to Sun Valley for the annual Monroe Cup slaloms Saturday, Feb. 21 and the Lonnie Basolo Memorial giant slaloms Sunday, Feb. 22. Sponsors are the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation (Monroe Cup, chief of race Brett Jacobson) and Hailey Ski Team (Basolo Memorial, chief of race Rich Smith).

In other Intermountain Division news, the Feb. 26-28 men's and women's USSA J1-J3 (ages 13-18) super giant slaloms originally scheduled for Bogus Basin near Boise have been moved to McCall's Brundage Mountain. All entries are due by Monday, Feb. 23.

Fink-Debray has success in Nor-Am speed races

Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation Olympic Development Team alpine racer Miles Fink-Debray, 20, of Ketchum enjoyed plenty of success in the Nor-Am Speed Series at Mammoth Mountain, Ca. last week.

Currently ranked #10 in the Nor-Am super giant slalom standings, Fink-Debray was 11th overall (the 5th American in a strong international field) and 17th in the Feb. 10-11 Mammoth super giant slaloms. He placed seventh overall and finished as the second American in the Feb. 12 super combined event.

SVSEF ODT coach Tyler Palmer said he "couldn't be happier," for Fink-Debray. Palmer credited the young man's success with hard work and preparation. He said, "Miles is one of the most prepared athletes out there. Physically and mentally he has embraced the ski racing lifestyle and he is on task."
