Chanteuses sing supreme

Romance and dance are on docket for the weekend

Blossom Dearie, the famous jazz and cabaret singer who died on Monday at the age of 92, said once that she thought there was a place for "romance in this loud, violent and vulgar world."

Coincidentally, several female chanteuses will perform cabaret style in the valley on Valentine's Day, bringing a little romance into our uncertain world.

Jazz singer Tyia Wilson, who now resides in Sun Valley, will headline the "Love Takes the Stage" benefit at nexStage Theatre at 6:30 p.m. After the cabaret show at 10 p.m., she will host a DJ dance party at the theater, open to all.

Hailey-based singer Cheryl Morrell joins pianist Alan Pennay in Sun Valley Lodge's Duchin Lounge from 5-8:30 p.m. on Sunday and Monday.

And at Art Quest West in The Courtyard, Ketchum will host a Valentine's Party from 5-7 p.m. on Valentine's Day with music by High Street Band and food and refreshments from Rasberrys. (OK, so they aren't chantueses, but they are a flamboyantly fun jazz and swing band.)

Also on Saturday, Feb. 14, Susan Fowler will perform at the Sweetheart Lounge at the new Elkhorn Springs Restaurant. The lounge will open immediately after the Twilight Snowshoe benefit and auction for Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research.

"I am delighted that Expedition Inspiration has asked me to participate in this worthy event and dedicate my evening to those who have so courageously suffered from breast cancer," Fowler said.

Fowler is a member of the Seattle Symphony Chorale and the Seattle Jazz Singers, and has performed at Seattle's Benaroya Hall and the Vancouver Wine and Jazz Festival. At the latter event she performed with jazz great John Pizzarelli.

She is also a founding member of the BlueStreet Jazz voices, and does extensive voiceover work in the Seattle area. Accompanying Fowler will be pianist and BlueStreet Jazz Voices Artistic Director Andy Carr, who is also a founding member of Tangoheart, the Northwest's premier tango ensemble.

The cover charge is included for participants in Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research's Twilight Snowshoe Celebration. For all others, the Sweetheart Lounge will open at 9 p.m. with a $20 cover at the door. A no-host bar will be available with designer libations.

Funds raised during these events will go directly to support promising young researchers in the field of breast cancer and to help fund the 13th annual Laura Evans Memorial Breast Cancer Symposium, Thursday, Feb. 26.

Tickets for the Twilight Snowshoe Celebration are $125 and can be purchased by calling 726-6456 or from www.expeditioninspiration.org.
