Exes, whys and ZZZZs

By CHRIS MILLSPAUGH

Today is Friday the 13th. "They" say that this is the day to fear. The Greeks had a word for it. Ready? Paraskavedekatriaphobia, paraskevi meaning Friday and dekatreis meaning thirteen. Slap on "phobia" (fear) on the end and you have a fear of Friday the 13th. So we're supposed to be afraid of this day? Why?

Tomorrow is St. Valentine's Day. "They" say that this is the day of love when lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine's cards, flowers or candy. That's fine for them but what if you're not hooked up? Do I refer back to the time I was? I mean, do I have to send one to my "ex?" Why?

This is a tough weekend, folks. There's Friday the 13th followed by Valentine's Day and all under the effects of a solar eclipse that we can't even see. Come on! Aren't we all stressed out enough with the bad economy, fear of unemployment, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Do we need these days to give us more angst?

Then, there's income tax filing for last year to throw in the mix. What if you're expecting a return and they say you owe them? You got to ask why? If you love somebody and it's not reciprocal, do you let them go and if they come back ask them why?

Blame it on fate. Blame it on the eclipse. Blame it on a black cat. Blame it on your accountant. Blame it on the bossa nova. All I want to know is why.

Here's an idea for us: Tell those nagging voices in our heads to shut up! There's no blame to project. There are no "whys" due to a member of the 21st century. It just is. That's why.

All right, I'm feeling better and so should you. Maybe all we need in these confusing times is a nap. A few zzzs never hurt anybody. Sleep is good. Or just forget about the exes, whys and zzzs and get on with your life. Everything is going to be all right.

Yeah. How come?

Nice talking to you.
