February focus on teen dating violence

Dating violence can happen to anyone -- nationally, 1 in 3 teens in a dating relationship have been abused by their partner, according to The Advocates. The group stresses that just because someone hasn't been hit doesn't mean that they aren't in an abusive relationship. Abuse can be verbal, emotional, sexual, or physical. A staggering 19 percent of Idaho high school students report being hit, slapped, or punched by their dating partners within the past 12 months, and 11 percent of high schools girls were forced to engage in unwanted sexual contact.

In recognition of the need to end dating violence, the mayors of Ketchum, Sun Valley and Hailey all proclaimed February 2-6, 2008 as National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Prevention Week.

Throughout the month of February, The Advocates will be speaking to middle and high school students about healthy relationships, educating parents on the latest dating trends, and promoting awareness campaigns.
