Boulder Mountain Ski Tour cross-country skiers did nearly 20 miles Saturday. Down at Huntsville, Texas, Community School Head of School Andy Jones-Wilkins went a bit farther on a warm, 82-degree day.
Jones-Wilkins, 41, won the Rocky Raccoon 100-mile endurance race Saturday in a time of 15 hours and 58 minutes. The Ketchum resident was 14 minutes ahead of second-place finisher Scott Jaime of Colorado.
It was the fourth 100-mile trail run victory in the last three years for Jones-Wilkins—and the seventh consecutive time he has finished in the top two of a 100-mile trail race.
Jones-Wilkins said, "The trail was dry and sandy with many exposed roots and rocks. I did run the race in 2005-06 but the course was completely different, almost 50% roads. The new course is almost entirely single-track trail."
Later this year Jones-Wilkins plans to participate in his sixth Western States 100-mile endurance run from Squaw Valley to Auburn, Ca. The 36th annual Western States event will be June 27-28.
The Western States enduro was canceled in 2008, but Jones-Wilkins established himself as one of the country's top endurance runners on the California course from 2004-07. He was eighth overall in 18:26 in 2004, second at 17:07 in 2005, seventh at 20:04 in 2006, and fourth overall at 17:20 in 2007.
