Slow response on garbage

At 10 a.m. on the morning of Saturday, Jan. 24, a citizen notified the Blaine County Sheriff's Office dispatch that four large bags of garbage had been neatly placed at the intersection of North Picabo Road and Gannett Road. At the time of notification it was unknown what the bags contained. It was requested by the caller that the Sheriff's Office pick up the garbage and determine what the contents were and possibly gain some form of information as to who may have littered.

On Sunday afternoon, 30 hours after the initial contact, dispatch was once again notified by the citizen to inform it that the bags were still there. The citizen was told by dispatch that there was nothing that the Sheriff's Office could do and that Blaine County Road and Bridge had been notified; it was their responsibility to pick up and dispose of highway litter.

Seriously? Someone can just drop off their garbage on any county road and it is OK? Why do we pay for garbage disposal services then? Why doesn't the Wood River Valley just become one large landfill? The police should inspect suspicious bags left on the roadways. It is dangerous for citizens to deal with suspicious sacks of garbage. What if they contained body parts, drug paraphernalia, weapons, etc? It may not always be "garbage" that people are dumping.

I would like to offer a big ol' thank you to the Sheriff's Office for the response that they offer the members of Blaine County. Thanks to the "quick" response by the Sheriff's Office and/or Road and Bridge, 48 hours after the initial notification, the items were picked up by the citizens and placed in their private dumpster. However, this was not before a snow and windstorm swept through the area. Luckily for the residents who have the property bordering this intersection, the contents did not get blown about. One can only imagine what a beautiful mess the beer boxes, cans, drink cups and alcohol bottles that were inside these bags would have made.

In closing, I just want to say that it is nice to know that the precious open spaces that Blaine County tries to preserve are so highly thought of by its public service employees.
