Hockey player pleads not guilty to battery

A 52-year-old Ketchum woman pleaded not guilty Monday to misdemeanor battery for allegedly clubbing an opponent with her stick during a coed no-check hockey game last month in Sun Valley.

Georgia Hutchinson was arraigned on the charge before Blaine County Magistrate Court Judge R. Ted Israel, who advised her of her rights and told her that the crime is punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Hutchinson appeared without legal counsel but told Israel she intends to hire an attorney. Israel scheduled a pretrial conference for 2 p.m. on March 2.

Hutchinson's husband, former Ketchum Mayor Dave Hutchinson, attended the hearing.

Georgia Hutchinson is accused of hitting opposition player Steve "Hugey" McCoy during a B+ Hockey League game at the Sun Valley indoor hockey rink on Jan. 11. A Sun Valley police report alleges that McCoy had fallen to the ice and that Hutchinson clubbed him in the leg with her hockey stick hard enough to cause a bruise and break the stick.

"Normally we wouldn't pursue something like this in a hockey game, but this was a coed, no-contact league," said Sun Valley Assistant Police Chief Mike Crawford after Hutchinson was issued a citation on Jan. 12. "Our officer spoke to a lot of witnesses and they basically said this was way beyond hockey."

The league's governing board suspended Hutchinson for three games because of the incident.
