Perhaps we citizens of Hailey ought to be insisting that our local government establish a Shade Tree Commission to study if the upcoming announced removal of shade trees with their accompanying grassy spots is a real necessity so that concrete ribbons of sidewalks can be installed in what has been—up to now—those grassy shady areas, especially of Old Hailey, which remain the single most rewarding and outstanding feature of our beautiful town. We must ask ourselves, "What do we have that is worth preserving, and if we give up what we have, just exactly what will we gain/lose as a result?"
This is a question that needs to be addressed now—before these winter snows melt, and tree removal crews are in place. Or perhaps a vote on this issue ought to be scheduled so that popular sentiments of property owners can be judged before irreversible degreening is begun.
