Alpine Roundup


Local racers are in the thick of the competitive winter season. Here are results from around the region.

Snowboarding

Sun Valley's Graham Watanabe finished second to another Idaho racer, Nate Holland, in the U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix men's snowboardcross at Boreal Resort at Tahoe in California. In the women's halfpipe at the same event, Kaitlyn Farrington of Bellevue, rode to fourth place behind the big guns on the U.S. Team: Hannah Teter, Kelly Clark and Gretchen Bleiler.

Freeskiing

Local big mountain skier North Parker turned in some great early-season results in two International Free Skiing Association events last month.

Competing in the Cowboy Up Junior Freeskiing Challenge at Stevens Pass, Wash., Parker a senior at The Community School, finished third. He skied to fourth overall at the 2009 Canadian Open at Red Mountain, B.C.

FIS Results

Hailey Ski Team racers Miles Sweek, Jordan Smith and Sierra Fox and Sun Valley's Bergen Palmer, Tanner Farrow and Miles Fink-Debray competed in FIS Super G and Downhill races at Big Sky, Montana, Jan. 26-Feb. 2. The field featured more the 150 racers. Results: Fink-Debray: 11-DH, 6-DH, 7-DH, 5-DH. Palmer: 19-DH, 30-DH, 43-DH, 57-DH, 30-SG, 13-SG. Farrow: 43-DH, 29-DH, 49-DH, 48-DH, 51-SG, 62-SG. Sweek: 69-DH, 27-DH, 36-DH, 22-DH, 78-SG, 46-SG. Smith: 102-DH, 76-DH, 62-DH, 67-DH, 83-SG, 76-SG. Fox: 23-DH, 10-DH, 21-SG, 33-SG.

Snowbasin Qualifiers

Wide-open Wildcat Bowl at Snowbasin Resort in Utah was the setting for a pair of J3 qualifying giant slaloms, Jan. 31-Feb. 1. Posting top results were Sun Valley's Teagan Palmer with a pair of third-place finishes, and Kipling Weisel with a second. K.J. Savaria, Cate Fairley and Ben Kanellitsas also cracked the top ten.

North Series

Giant slalom was the discipline at Kelly Canyon for the Wesley Deist Memorial.

Sun Valley racer Whitney Engelmann was a two-time winner in the J3 girls' class. Jordan Fitzgerald was runner-up and sixth in the J4 division. In the J5 boys' division, Hailey Ski Team's Kyle Maxwell raced to first and second. Teammate Yuri McClure was first and third.
