Guided by new coach Dick Springs, the Ketchum Five Star women's hockey team enjoyed a productive weekend at the annual Debra Doom Tournament at Snow King Arena in Jackson Hole.
Five Star reeled off three consecutive victories to earn the right to play in the B bracket championship against the Wasatch Wings. Skating in their second game that morning, Ketchum did not quite have enough gas in the tank in a narrow 2-0 loss.
Ketchum opened the tilt by beating hometown Jackson Hole 3-2. Jini Griffith (Sara Schoeder/Lisa Wood) netted the game-winning goal with 4:30 remaining in the game. Bege Reynolds (Schroeder) and Wood (Mia Edsel) lit the lamp as well.
Down 1-0 to the Colorado Spitfire, Five Star tallied three unanswered goals to win 3-1. Schroeder (Nancy Parsons-Brown/Reynolds) split the pipes twice and Reynolds singled. The Ketchum gals went on to win a 1-0 squeeker over Wasatch on a goal by Wood (Griffith/Dotty Sarchett) and a standout performance by goalie Denae Commons. Lacie Hernandez, Heidi Ottley and Jeanie Kiel rounded out the roster.
Sunsets
For the Sun Valley Sunsets, the Debra Doom Hockey Tournament brought a certain amount of gloom to go with the doom as the sextet went 1-2 in the four-team A bracket.
Mountain town nemesis Jackson Hole dumped Sun Valley 9-4 in the opening game Friday.
"We were just very defensive-minded in that first game," captain Sarah Benson said. "It was hard for us to transition from defense to offense. All our goals were scored in the third period."
Emilia Peraza tallied two goals. Lucy Chubb and Most Valuable Player Christine Davis-Jeffers contributed one goal each.
In the second match, Sun Valley's Kipp Mills (Sheila Naghsh) and Liza Weekes (Wendy Speth/Peraza) scored in a 2-0 shutout of the Montana Weasels. Goalie Linda McMahon, filling in for Karen Morrison, pitched the shutout.
Utah's Black Diamonds made the most of their shots in a 4-1 victory over the Sunsets. Speth slotted the team's lone goal.
