Freestylers arrive at Baldy for weekend contest

SVSEF kids back from Snow Bowl

Baldy's Roundhouse Slope will be filled with bump skiers today, Friday (for single moguls) and Saturday, Jan. 24 (dual moguls) because one of the largest freestyle events in the West has arrived in town.

Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation freestyle program director Andy Ware said, "This event has been gaining recognition the past few years as the largest divisional freestyle event in the West. Many of the best mogul skiers in the country will be here.

"And Sunday we are hosting our first slopestyle event at Rotarun in Hailey. Thanks to the support and hard work of Jeff Smith and Chase Gouley of Rotarun, and SVSEF freestyle and snowboard coaches, we have an excellent course for athletes to show off their best stuff."

Tuning up for the big weekend, coach Joey Cordeau and nine Sun Valley Freestyle Team athletes traveled to Snow Bowl, Mont. last weekend.

Young skiers Chris Lentz (2-J4 and 3-J4), Illiah Pfau (4-J4 twice) and Dane Flaherty (5-J4) got their first taste of competing on the road and did well.

Joey Richardson continued to ski well and finished second in his J3 age group and 13th overall. He crashed giving it his all Sunday. On Sunday Trevor Norris had his best finish ever, claiming 10th overall and second in the J3 category.

Will Eagan also skied well, taking 12th overall and fifth in J2. Alysha Herich took second place in J4 girls. And Parker Page was ninth in J2 moguls, plus fifth overall and the second J2 boy in the aerials.

Alumni SVSEF freestylers excelled, too. Aunika Phillips placed first overall each day and was the top J2. Kali Phillips was second overall and the leading J1 Sunday. And Lauren Phillips led the seniors and was second overall on Saturday.
