Ten age-class podium finishes and a girls' 5-kilometer classic victory by J2 Maggie Williams topped the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation cross-country ski efforts last weekend at Trail Creek Nordic Center near Wilson, Wyo.
Sun Valley, looking ahead to qualifying for the 2009 USSA C ross Country Junior Nationals March 9-14 at Truckee, Ca., competed in the first of three Junior National qualifying races, this one hosted by the Jackson Hole (Wyo.) Ski Club.
Called the Johnny Curtis Memorial, the weekend regional event organized by former SVSEF assistant coach Ali Deines, now of Jackson Hole, consisted of freestyle skate racing Saturday, Jan. 17 and classic events on Sunday, Jan. 18.
Williams finished second in Saturday's 5k skate race for the 14-15 age class and won Sunday's 5k classic event.
Placing second in their age classes were Makayla Cappel, Katie Feldman, Max Durtschi, Mandy Watts, Sam Farnham and Daniel Sundali. Third place podium skiers included Sun Valley's Torin Tucker.
Other JN qualifiers for Sun Valley are Jan. 28-31 at Soldier Hollow, Utah and Feb. 12-15 at West Yellowstone, Mt. The Intermountain Division team to Junior Nationals will be named Sunday, Feb. 15.
