Drug coalition: who we are

I want to thank the Express and Dana Dugan for the article last week on Big Brother Big Sister's coming to the Wood River Valley.

There has been some confusion regarding our organization's name. We will continue to be formally known as the Blaine County Community Drug Coalition; however, we felt like we needed a shorter nickname-acronym for easier community identification. This nickname had been the CDC. Due to the fact that the community has another CDC—the Community Development Corp.—our coalition felt we needed to migrate to something different. We decided at a recent meeting that CC—Community Coalition—was short and easy, but dropped the all-important "Drug" out of the name. With this in mind the organization voted to go with the nickname of Blaine County Drug Coalition (BCDC) for the time being.

I recently spoke to a group of parents at The Community School and a thoughtful parent commented that he had no idea we addressed alcohol as part of our mission due to the fact that our name does not specify alcohol. Let me be clear, we are extremely focused on alcohol, but the point is well taken.
