After dropping three of its first four, the Sun Valley Suns senior men's hockey team (3-3-0) pulled itself up to the .500 level last weekend with a 6-0 and 12-4 sweep of the visiting Cache Valley (Utah) Trappers at Sun Valley Skating Center.
Sixth-year Suns goalie Ryan Thomson recorded his third shutout in the Sun Valley net Friday, making just 17 saves in a briskly played two-hour skate. It was Thomson's first shutout in four years and the first by a Suns goalie since Colin Zulianello's 39-save gem against McCall Dec. 31, 2005.
Saturday's rout was one for the scoresheet, with 12 goals and 22 assists by Suns players.
Former Sun Valley Midget Taylor Rothgeb put up the first three-goal hat trick of the 2008-09 season Saturday to go with two goals apiece by veterans Jamie Ellison, Billy Tryder and captain Chris Warrington.
In all, 22 different Suns players were credited with weekend points as the home team out-pointed Utah 52-8.
There was one unfortunate note: Longtime hockey official and all-time leading Suns goal scorer Bobby Noyes suffered a knee injury after dropping the puck for a faceoff in the third period of Saturday's blowout.
Sun Valley continues four consecutive weekends of home hockey action in January with the expected visits of the Langley (B.C.) Senior Chiefs Jan. 16-17 and the Jackson Hole (Wyo.) Moose on Jan. 23-24.
Langley is due to arrive this weekend. Opening faceoffs are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Sun Valley Skating Center. Friday's benefit is Atkinson Park Penguins and Saturday's benefit is Sawtooth Pony Club.
