Special Olympics will do without the Dalai Lama

The 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games are fast approaching. The games will be held in Idaho, Saturday, Feb. 7 through Friday, Feb. 13. Some 3,000 athletes from more than 85 nations will compete in seven Olympic-type sports: Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, figure skating, floor hockey, snowboarding, snowshoe racing and speed skating.

One of the planned highlights was a visit by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He accepted an invitation to attend certain events associated with the 2009 World Winter Games in October, but recently had to cancel, according to organizers of the event.

The Global Torch Run continues on its way to Idaho. It is now on its way to China, where the World Summer Games were held earlier this year. On Jan. 29 the flame will reach Idaho to begin the Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg. It will be run through scores of cities throughout the state, including Sun Valley on the evening of Feb. 3 and leaving Feb. 4 for Glenn's Ferry.

A concert with Michael Franti & Spearhead will be held Tuesday, Feb. 10, at the Sun Valley Pavilion.
