Mini World Cup gets started

The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation's C-Home Mini World Cup 2009 debuted Sunday on a bitter cold racing day. Team Switzerland was the overall giant slalom winner on Baldy's Cozy ski run. Here are the top boys and girls:

Boys: 1—Wyatt Smith 34.31. 2—Will Snyder 34.58. 3—John Blackburn 35.86. 4—Kobe Tamura 36.35. 5—Hayden Cowden 36.53.

Girls: 1—Margot Griffith 36.09. 2—Katelyn Rathfon 36.95. 3—Abby Norton 37.29. 4—Sophia Kanellitsas 37.70. 5—Sage Rheinschild 37.88.

Freestylers at Targhee

SVSEF freestyle program director Andy Ware reported his team's results from the "Best of the West," Intermountain Division freestyle meet Jan. 2-4 at Grand Targhee in eastern Idaho.

Highlights included Colter Brehmer's J1 overall victory in slopestyle, and Zana Davey taking the top J2 girls' spot in Saturday's moguls competition. Other podium placers were Adam Vorsteveld, Ben Parker, Alysha Herich, Nathan Moses, Joey Richardson, Trevor Norris and Trevor Brand. Placings:

Slopestyle: Colter Brehmer (1st overall, 1-J1), Adam Vorsteveld (3-J3), Ben Parker (2-J3), Connor Braatz (5-J2) and Colton Braatz (4-J3).

Saturday moguls: Zana Davey (2nd overall, 1-J2), Alysha Herich (3-J4), Nathan Moses (2-J2), Joey Richardson (2-J3), Trevor Norris (3-J3), Trevor Brand (4-J3), R.J. Bracken (8-J3), Ben Parker (11-J3) and Luke Robertson (7-J4).

Sunday moguls: Zana Davey (2-J2, 3rd duals), Alysha Herich (2-J4), Nathan Moses (3-J2, 3rd overall), Joey Richardson (5-J3, 3rd duals), Trevor Norris (2-J3, 5th overall), Trevor Brand (3-J3), R.J. Bracken (7-J3) and Luke Robertson (6-J4).

Bantams in Idaho Falls tournament

Sun Valley Youth Hockey Bantams (ages 13-14) will travel to Idaho Falls this weekend for a four-team tournament with Billings (Mt.), Salmon and Idaho Falls. Sun Valley plays Billings at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10 and Salmon at 6 p.m. On Sunday, it's Idaho Falls vs. Sun Valley at 8 a.m. Championship game is set for 2 p.m. Sunday.

BCRD youth basketball to begin

Learning fundamentals, having fun and developing teamwork are goals of the Blaine County Recreation District's winter youth basketball league for boys and girls in kindergarten through the seventh grade.

Registration is today, Wednesday, Jan. 7 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at The Community Campus in Hailey. League play goes from Jan. 20 through March 13. Meeting times are 5-8:30 p.m. at The Community Campus. Fees are $55 if paid before Jan. 16 and $65 after. Scholarships are available.

Coaches are needed. Call James Nelson at 788-2117 ext. 221 to register your interest.

Winter registration night is Jan. 7 in Hailey

The Blaine County Recreation District's winter registration night is today, Wednesday, Jan. 7 from 5-7:30 p.m. at The Community Campus in Hailey. Parents can register for programs like youth basketball, cheerleading, the Pond Hockey Classic, a youth bowling league, the Snow Box Derby, the Kid Zone after-school program, aerobics and taekwondo.

B+ League hockey update

Sharks ended their four-game losing skid with a 5-3 victory over Senators, led by Rod Watson's three-goal hat trick. Chris Roberts and Christine Davis-Jeffers added single goals for the winners. Senators goal scorers were Pete Ross, Nicole Perkins and Sean O'Connell.

Two other one-goal games rounded out Sunday's card at Sun Valley Skating Center.

Bad Dogs nipped the Isles 5-4. Bad Dogs goals came from Scott Seaward (2), Gary Norbom, Chris Peterson and Bill Brassil. The Isles came up one goal short despite scores by Dan Gorham (2), Shannon Flavin and Josh Green.

In the late game Vipers outlasted Wildcats 4-3. Scott Miller lit the light twice for Vipers and got help from Jim Laski and Terry Crawford. Wildcats scorers were Merri Whitehead (2) and Gunnar Whitehead.

Next on Sunday, Jan. 4: Isles (4-3-0) vs. Sharks (2-4-0) at 7:45 p.m. and Bad Dogs (3-2-2) vs. Wildcats (3-2-1) at 9 p.m. Drawings byes this week were Senators (3-3-1) and Vipers (4-3-0).
