Odd elk logic

After reading the Express last Wednesday, I became more and more puzzled by Idaho Department of Fish and Game spokesperson Regan Berkley's logic surrounding the question of feeding or not feeding the elk herd in Elkhorn. If Ms. Berkley's support of the feeding program at the Bullwhacker site is sound, then why wouldn't the same logic apply to the feeding of elk in Elkhorn?

Homeowners in the Golden Eagle subdivision have supported an elk-feeding program in Timber Gulch. Feeding the herd in the high ridge site above the old Dumke barn has, for 30-plus years, kept the elk away from residential subdivisions. Now with new barn and property owners, the elk are supposed to fend for themselves and automatically move to a different area to feed or starve to death. Is this what the community wishes?

There is an organization willing to purchase hay and feed the elk when needed. The Wood River Elk Trust will commit to taking on the task. Private donations have supported the cause. It is the right thing to do. What is wrong with The Community School, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, and the Elkhorn Homeowners Association?
