David Allen Leonard

David Allen Leonard, age 61, passed away after a long courageous battle with cancer on Jan. 1 at St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center in Ketchum surrounded by his family. He was born on March 14, 1947, in Albany, N.Y. He grew up in the Albany area and spent his childhood traveling with his family, skiing and at New York Giants football games.

After a few years at New England College in Vermont, he attended the Woodstock music festival then followed his heart out West. In 1971 his car broke down in Idaho and he fell in love with the Sawtooth Mountains. He settled in Ketchum and worked a variety of jobs that allowed him to ski and teach downhill racing. He met the love of his life at the Ketchum Fish Market and they were married in 1978.

He spent most of his life working as a carpenter and took great pride in his craft but the mountains were David's candy store.  He backpacked and climbed many peaks in the state and spent his nights with a glass of good wine, reading topo maps and planning his next adventure. He was known for telling a great joke and having the cleanest turn on the slopes. He was a devoted family man and one of the original environmentalists.

He was preceded in death by his brother Billy and his parents,, Arthur and Janet. He leaves behind his wife of 30 years, Cindy; his son, Schuyler; his daughter, Malia; a granddaughter, Aislyn; a sister, June, and a brother, James. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, Jan. 9 from 4-7 p.m. at 710 Angela Dr. in Hailey. In lieu of flowers, David would have appreciated contributions in his memory to the Sawtooth Society or the American Cancer Society.
