Pick o' the flicks

By DANA DUGAN

The movie year is all but over and we're still waiting for some Oscar-candidate films to arrive on Wood River Valley screens. This gets harder and harder every year as so many distributors think it's just a hoot to release movies the final week of the year, in time to be considered for the Academy Awards 2009.

A few of the films that have made it on some top ten lists are "Happy Go Lucky," "Milk," "Synecdoche, N.Y.," "The Wrestler," "Slumdog Millionaire," "Iron Man," the Spanish movie "In the City of Sylvia," "Che" and the French movie "Un Conte de Noel (A Christmas Tale)."

But we mustn't forget "The Dark Knight," "Vicky Christina Barcelona," "Wall-E," "Rachel Getting Married" "Ghost Town," and the little seen "Shotgun Stories."

But here in the Wood River Valley where we get our films in clumps and festivals it's a chore to catch them as they race through town.

Of course, the Golden Globe nominations were already announced which often gives an idea of how people are thinking. Though let's face it. The Globes are only voted on by some 100 or so star-struck members of the foreign press. The nominated dramas are, "The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button," "Frost/Nixon," "The Reader," "Revolutionary Road and "Slumdog Millionaire."

At least one of those ("Benjamin Button") can be seen on a big screen in the valley.

So here's our out-in-the-boonies' challenge. Send in your top ten flicks in time for printing in the January 28 issue. It's a tricky business. Keep in mind that several 2007 movies were finally released this year such as Oscar winning "The Counterfeiters," but are not admissible.

Email your lists to ddugan@mtexpress.com, fax to 726-2329 or drop them off at the Idaho Mountain Express office at 591 First Avenue North in Ketchum. Be sure to include your full name and the town you live in.
