Sun Valley to open gondola next season

Sun Valley Co. announced Tuesday that it will begin construction on its planned Roundhouse Gondola this spring.

After its construction date, originally set for last summer, was postponed, the gondola is now scheduled to open for the 2009-10 ski season. The eight-passenger gondola, manufactured by Austria-based Doppelmayr, will take skiers and snowboarders from the base of River Run to the Roundhouse restaurant.

The gondola will also be used to provide round-trip transportation for restaurant guests during the day and night in both winter and summer. It will carry passengers nearly 2,000 feet up Bald Mountain in less than eight minutes, according to a Sun Valley Co. press release.

The lift line for the gondola was cut this summer, with help from several Sun Valley Ski Patrol members, and was recently opened to skiers as the Sleeping Bear run, running between the Roundhouse Slope and lower Olympic cat track.
