Jim Funk’s decision to stop offering take-out service at Desperado’s Mexican restaurant because of its environmental costs may seem like a trivial matter. But willingly giving up a significant part of one’s business income, especially now, was certainly a very big decision for Jim. And what effect will it have on the world? How much less carbon dioxide will be released into the atmosphere? Will it make any measurable impact on landfills and water conservation? What positive ripple effect, if any, will result from Jim’s choosing less rather than more, for willfully rejecting the bottom-line? It may be hard to measure, but Jim Funk’s act of conscience is an inspiring one, a leader’s decision, a deed that, however small, has helped move our community toward sustainability.
