Sports summary


BCRD youth basketball to begin

     Learning fundamentals, having fun and developing teamwork are goals of the Blaine County Recreation District’s winter youth basketball league for boys and girls in kindergarten through the seventh grade.

     The league holds its registration nights next week. North county families can register Tuesday, Jan. 6 from 6-7 p.m. at HemingwayElementary School in Ketchum. The other registration night is Wednesday, Jan. 7 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at The Community Campus in Hailey.

     League play goes from Jan. 20 through March 13. Meeting times are 5-8:30 p.m. at The Community Campus. Fees are $55 if paid before Jan. 16 and $65 afterward. Scholarships are available.

     Coaches are needed. Call James Nelson at 788-2117 ext. 221 to register your interest.

   

Winter registration night is Jan. 7 in Hailey

     The Blaine County Recreation District’s winter registration night is Wednesday, Jan. 7 from 5-7:30 p.m. at The Community Campus in Hailey. Parents can register for programs like youth basketball, cheerleading, the Pond Hockey Classic, a youth bowling league, the Snow Box Derby, the Kid Zone after-school program, aerobics and taekwondo. Call 788-2117.

   

Three middle school wrestlers place at state meet

     WoodRiverMiddle School wrestlers Storm Anderson, Tommy Bailey and Kaleb Guisasola placed in their weight classes during the Idaho Middle School State Championships Dec. 19 at Nampa’s IdahoCenter arena.

     Eighth-grader Anderson came up with the best finish, second place in the 140-pound class behind Joshua Maxfield of HillsideJunior High School.

     Bailey, also an eighth grader, was fourth in the 112-pound weight class. And seventh-grader Guisasola placed fifth in the 68-pound class.

 

B+ League hockey update

     Sharks ended their four-game losing skid with a 5-3 victory over Senators, led by Rod Watson’s three-goal hat trick. Chris Roberts and Christine Davis-Jeffers added single goals for the winners. Senators goal scorers were Pete Ross, Nicole Perkins and Sean O’Connell.

     Two other one-goal games rounded out Sunday’s card at Sun ValleySkatingCenter.

     Bad Dogs nipped the Isles 5-4. Bad Dogs goals came from Scott Seaward (2), Gary Norbom, Chris Peterson and Bill Brassil. The Isles came up one goal short despite scores by Dan Gorham (2), Shannon Flavin and Josh Green.

     In the late game Vipers outlasted Wildcats 4-3. Scott Miller lit the light twice for Vipers and got help from Jim Laski and Terry Crawford. Wildcats scorers were Merri Whitehead (2) and Gunnar Whitehead.

     Next on Sunday, Jan. 4: Isles (4-3-0) vs. Sharks (2-4-0) at 7:45 p.m. and Bad Dogs (3-2-2) vs. Wildcats (3-2-1) at 9 p.m. Drawings byes this week were Senators (3-3-1) and Vipers (4-3-0).

 

Trout Unlimited meeting focuses on Bhutan

     “Bhutan, Land of the Thunder Dragon,” is the featured presentation of Trout Unlimited’s January meeting scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 8 from 5-7 p.m. at Roosevelt Grill in Ketchum. Featured speaker Bryant Dunn will discuss the Buddhist kingdom located in the eastern Himalayas. Dunn is the owner and operator of Sun Valley Outfitters who has been leading fishermen and hunters around the area for 15 years.

     Anglers and other outdoor enthusiasts are welcome to attend the free program presented by the Hemingway chapter of Trout Unlimited. Call Bob Law at 622-4613 or rflaw@cox.net for details.
