Carey shoots for the stars, grabs 12-0 season

State football champs a fourth time

Lane Kirkland was a 5-7, 135-pound senior running back/safety for the Carey School eight-man football team in 1988 when the Panthers suf-fered through a 0-8 season. Ten years later, Carey was 11-0 and a state champion for the second time. In 2008, eighth-year Carey coach Kirkland and his team set a goal of winning state and going undefeated again. Carey (12-0 this fall, 33-3 over 3 years) achieved that goal Nov. 21 with a 46-12 victory over Kootenai at Moscow—in the process be-coming the highest-scoring team in Carey football annals.
