Wood River Journal ends 127-year run

After the Wood River Journal shut its doors in October, the Idaho Mountain Express obtained the archives of the 127-year history of the Hailey weekly paper. Here, Express publisher Pam Morris holds some of the paperís history. Photo by Willy Cook

The south valley’s economic successes were not big enough to keep the Wood River Journal newspaper in business.

A 127-year succession of newspapers ended in Hailey when the Journal closed its doors for good. The Idaho Mountain Express bought the assets of the paper in October, ending a 34-year rivalry.

The Journal’s archives, which are in safekeeping by the Mountain Express, reach back to the mining boom of the early 1880s and include the records of several newspapers, including the Hailey Times, The Hailey News Miner and the Wood River Journal.

The Wood River Journal name lives on in the Wednesday“Valley” section of the Express.

“The archives are perhaps the most exciting part,” said Express Publisher Pam Morris. “Newspapers record history on the fly, and these archives stretch back to the mining days of the 19th century.”

Express Publishing launched the Idaho Mountain Express in 1974.

“We believe the interests of this unique region, and the history contained in the Wood River Journal’s archives, are best served with local ownership,” said Express Publishing Board Chairwoman Martha Poitevin Page.
