2009 U.S. Freestyle Ski Team is named

The US Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) on Dec. 16 announced its 2008-09 U.S. Freestyle Ski Team including 39 athletes and the first-ever U.S. Ski Cross Team. Disciplines include moguls, aerials, dual moguls and ski cross.

The Americans opened their season with competitions in France and China last weekend. Former U.S. Ski Team World Cup alpine racers making up the first Ski Cross team are Casey Puckett, 36, of Aspen; Daron Rahlves, 35, of Sugar Bowl; and Jake Fiala, 33, of Colorado. Ski cross will be contested during the Nature Valley Freestyle Invitational Jan. 18-19 at Lake Placid, N.Y. Planned for Deer Valley and Park City, Utah Jan. 29-31 are moguls, aerials and skier halfpipe.

Sun Valley youth hockey players sell holiday wreaths

Sun Valley Youth Hockey members sold about 1,600 Christmas wreaths in this year's fundraising sale. "Our fundraising goals were surpassed again, for the fourth year in a row," fundraiser co-chair Kelly Martin said. "This year everything was well organized by our volunteers and the sales went smoothly."

The participation among all players was strong. Of the kids in the program, 62 made their minimum sales requirements and earned Sun Valley Youth Hockey hats. Martin reserved special praise for co-chair Kathy Noyes, Rich and Juli Evans, team sales captains and managers, and the tally team and distribution teams.

Top sellers were Anthony Martin of Midgets (80 wreaths), David Dredge of Midgets (48), Parker Weekes of the Bantams (42), Ellie Punnett of the 11-12 PeeWees (37), Ike Buxton and Conner Manning of the Mitey Mites (35), Kinley Miller of Mitey Mites (31), Jimmy Hague of the Midgets (28), Jett Erickson of Squirts (28) and Kelsey Kittleson of the Squirts (25).

They earned prizes ranging from Sun Valley Suns season passes, to cash, hockey equipment, lodging and snowmobiling. Earning pizza parties for having 100% participation were Squirts (ages 9-10), Bantams (13-14) and Midgets (15-18).

Rocky Mountain Section reveals golf awards

The Rocky Mountain Section PGA on Dec. 17 announced its 2008 award winners including Golf Pro of the Year to P. David Baucom, director of golf at Black Bull in Bozeman, Mt.

Other awards were Jim Empey of Boise's Shadow Valley (Teacher of the Year); Todd Bindner of Boise's Quail Hollow (Junior Golf Leader); Kevin Burton of Boise State University (Player of the Year); and Jeff Thomsen of Boise's Indian Lake GC (Senior Player of the Year). B+ League hockey update

The Isles won their fourth game of the season Sunday by a 4-0 shutout over the Senators in Senior B+ hockey action at Sun Valley Skating Center. Scoring for the winners were Dan Gorham (2 goals), Shannon Flavin and Taylor Rothgeb.

In another game, the Vipers got goals from Baba Street (2), Scott Miller and Alex Baron and won 4-1 over the Bad Dogs. Scott Seaward scored for Dogs.

Results of Dec. 14 games: The Senators and Bad Dogs skated to a 3-3 tie, the Wildcats shaded the Isles 3-2 and the Vipers won 3-1 over the S harks.

Next up on Sunday, Dec. 28: Isles (4-2-0) vs. Bad Dogs (2-2-2) at 4 p.m., Senators (3-2-1) vs. Sharks (1-4-0) at 5:15 p.m. and Wildcats (3-1-1) vs. Vipers (3-3-0) at 6:30 p.m.
