Tight matches a big plus in GBW wrestling meet

Nailbiters during WRHS clash with Jerome

Wood River sophomore Andrew Orr (on top, here) had a great match Wednesday with Jerome’s Tyler Powell before falling 12-10 in a very close 152-pound decision.

There weren't many highlights for the Wood River High School wrestling team during its pre-Christmas home dual meet against Great Basin Conference opponent Jerome Wednesday night in Hailey.

Wolverine highlights were humdingers, though. Four extremely close matches didn't go Wood River's way, but they were promising signs for the future for coach Tyson Young's rebuilding of the Hailey squad.

Jerome, getting six pins and three forfeits, won the GBW dual meet 60-6. The lone Wood River victory was posted by the team's most reliable wrestler to date, 145-pound junior Tanner Orchard with a solid 2:52 pin.

Leading 4-0 after the first period, Orchard found himself rushed in the standing position by Jerome's Heyden Thacker. Orchard got himself backed up a little, then just took Thacker and hurled him to the mat and pinned him quick as that.

All four close decisions were in middle and lightweights—at 103, 135, 152 and 160 pounds.

At 135, it was a dandy tight battle, 2-2 after one and 4-4 after two, between Wood River's Nick Chase and Jerome's Jonathan Albers. Trailing 6-4, Chase got an escape and takedown for a 7-6 lead and had a near-fall for a 10-6 lead with a minute left. Albers flipped Chase for a reversal and posted his own near-fall at the buzzer to win 11-10.

Andrew Orr, behind 7-3 at 152 pounds, kept pushing and pushing against Jerome's Tyler Powell and came up with a near-fall for an 8-7 lead after one. Powell inched ahead 10-8 after two rounds but Orr's reversal tied it 10-10. Powell gained a reversal with 18 seconds left for a 12-10 victory.

Jerome's Cody McCoy nipped Alex Jones 7-5 at 160 pounds in a match that was tied 5-5 after two periods. And, at 103 pounds, Wood River's Tyler Bartlett and Jerome's Eric Ayala battled into overtime before Ayala took down Bartlett late in the extra period to win 7-5.

There were 10 junior varsity matches Wednesday night. Jerome captured eight by pin and Wood River won two pins.

At 189 pounds, Haiden Aitkin built a 23-8 lead and pinned his Tiger opponent at 5:35. Juve Ruiz, in his second JV match of the night at 171 pounds, pinned at 1:57. Also wrestling JV for WRHS were Conner Bennett, J.R. Hill and Zach Ezell.

The Wolverines travel to Jerome and Twin Falls today and Saturday for the Bear Cat Invitational tournament, then return to home action with Kimberly and Century Jan. 5.
