Idle since winning the Missoula Blast Off tournament in November, the Sun Valley Bantams (ages 13-14) youth hockey team was glad to return to action Friday through Sunday in their own four-team tournament on Sun Valley ice.

Losing 5-2 and 5-2 in their first two games, and tying 2-2 in their third game of the weekend, the Bantams saved their best for last with a 2-1 victory to earn the third-place consolation title over the McCall/Boise Hawks Sunday morning.

Liam Jablonski, positioned at the right post, notched the eventual game winner midway through the third period of a 1-1 game after a strong shot from the point by Sun Valley defenseman Drew Barsch. Tom Crosby's unassisted goal in the first period gave the Bantams an early 1-0 lead in the victory.

Jablonski (2 goals/4 assists) and Crosby (2/3) were Sun Valley's top scorers during a weekend when the home team went 1-2-1 and scored eight goals to 13 for the opposition.

Friday night, the host Bantams opened with a 5-2 loss to the Idaho Falls Eagles. Sun Valley goals came from Parker Morris, a top-shelf shot during a middle attack after strong forechecking by Mason Noyes, and from Parker Weekes, assisted by Crosby and Jablonski.

Davis County (Utah) downed the Suns 5-2 Saturday morning, although Chris Carnes gave the home team a 1-0 lead after Jablonski won a draw deep in the Davis zone. Crosby (Weekes, Jablonski) later scored on a three-on-two. But too many loose pucks in front of the net doomed the Suns.

Trailing 2-0 after one period to the McCall Hawks later Saturday, the Suns got back in it on a breakout pass by Barsch that produced a Crosby-to-Jablonski rush. Weekes (2/1) dangled the forehand before shifting to his backhand and beating the sprawled goalie.

Weekes' goal energized the Suns. Before the second period ended, Crosby passed to Jablonski streaking down the right wing. Liam wristed a hard sharp-angled shot that beat the McCall goalie on the short side. The third period was scoreless for the 2-2 tie.

A strong defensive and forechecking effort was made by all with recognition to Karl Wilander, Drew Punnett, Chase Hutchinson, Peter MacMillan, Riley Sibbach, Cameron Jenner, AJ Rierden, Karel Kaiser, and Calder Zarkos.

Goalie Gus Conrad (53 saves) was solid between the pipes for coaches Tim Jeneson, Bob Crosby and Chris Zarkos. Davis County captured first place with a 4-2 win over the Idaho Fall Eagles.

Next up for the Bantams is the Holiday Tournament in Boise on Dec. 27-29.

Speth's scoring leads Sunsets in Utah

Wendy Speth was hot with her goal-scoring stick in Utah, but the Sun Valley Sunsets came up just a little short during last weekend's Goal Digger women's hockey tournament at Park City and Salt Lake City.

Speth (7 goals) scored in each of Sun Valley's four games including three two-goal efforts. Sun Valley (1-3 weekend, 17-18 goals against) dropped a pair of one-goal games including a 4-3 shootout loss to the Utah Lady Grizzlies in Sunday's consolation finale.

The Sunsets opened the four-team "A" Division tourney with a 5-4 loss to the Jackson Hole (Wyo.) Teton Passers. Speth scored twice and sisters Casey Mills and Kipp Mills added singles. In the second game, Salt Lake Black Diamonds clipped the Sunsets 8-4.

In the third game, Speth scored two goals and Christl Holzl notched a three-assist playmaker in the 6-1 Sunsets win over Utah's Grizzlies. The teams clashed again in the consolation final but Utah prevailed, despite two goals by Speth and one by Emilia Peraza (3 goals for the weekend).

Weekend Sunsets scoring: Speth 7 goals/0 assists; Peraza 3/1; Holzl 0/3; Lucy Chubb 1/2; Kris Miller 1/2; Casey Mills 2/0; Kipp Mills 1/1; Nicole Perkins 1/1; Sarah Benson 1/1; and Tizz Miller 0/2.

Coaches were Frank Salvoni and Tuck Hall. Also playing were Jen Embree, Lia Johnson and goalie Karen Morrison. Lucy Chubb received "The Jacket" for the weekend.

Goalies excel in 3-3 senior hockey tie

It was a showcase for the goaltenders Monday night when Morgan's Fine Finishes (1-1-1) and SunValley.com (1-1-1) skated to a 3-3 Senior Hockey League deadlock on Sun Valley Skating Center ice.

The game was tied after each period, 1-1, 2-2 and 3-3. Morgan's goalie Dave Stone and Mat Gershater of SunValley.com were equally good, especially Gershater who stood on his head and faced down seven shots on one Morgan's Thwarted Finishes shift.

Scoring for Morgan's were Spencer Brendel 1 goal/0 assists, Phil Hebert 1/0, Dave Hennessy 1/0, Todd Johnston 0/1 and Jeff Enos 0/1. SunValley.com scorers were Randy Ashton 1/0, Blake Jenson (1/0), Jeff Ballou (1/0) and Cody Proctor (0/1).

Last Wednesday, Frank Salvoni scored twice to go with singles by Charles Friedman (1 assist) and Harry Weekes as SV Auto Club/Grumpy's (2-0-0) nipped SunValley.com 4-3.

John McGuone added an assist for Grumpy's. SunValley.com scorers: Blake Jenson (1/1), Mike Punnett (1/0), Cody Proctor (1/0), Glenn Hunter (0/1) and Caleb Baukol (0/1).

Next up: It's Grumpy's vs. Yoga College (0-2-0) Thursday, Dec. 18 at 9:50 p.m., followed by Morgan's vs. Grumpy's Friday at 7 p.m. and Yoga vs. SunValley.com Monday at 6 p.m.
