Y to hold multicultural party

By DANA DUGAN
Express Staff Writer

Celebrate the overlapping December holidays at a Multicultural Holiday Party at the YMCA in Ketchum from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13. Guests at this festive and free event may go from room to room for activities and refreshments that adhere to holidays and their traditions from various cultures and countries.

Each guest will get a bingo card and will receive a stamp from the staff in each room. Those with the most stamps will be rewarded with coupons from local businesses.

In the Hanukkah room folks can learn how to make a dreidel, the traditional spinning top. The Wood River Jewish Community will provide decorations and religious symbols.

Boxing Day, Dec. 26, is a national holiday in the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. A day to remind us of the less fortunate, participants will be asked to bring a donation of non-perishable food to give to the Hunger Coalition.

The African American and Pan-African holiday Kwanzaa is a cultural, not religious, holiday celebrating community, family and culture. Participants light different colored candles in a specific order. Visitors to the Kwanzaa room will make a kinara to hold one black candle in the center signifying unity and the people, three red candles symbolizing the struggle and three green candles suggesting the future and hope.

In the Christmas room, everybody will celebrate with cider, cookies and games. The birthday of the Virgin of Guadalupe, Día de los Reyes and Día de los Muertos, will also be celebrated.

In memory of Bob Doyle, a beloved teacher and member of the board of the YMCA, there will be an altar, candles and a special ceremony as part of the Día de los Muertos. Bread samples will be provided.

To volunteer or for more information call Fernando Valdez at 727-9622 or Nancy Buxton at 928-6704.
